Jacob deGrom’s plan: Become a free agent in a year, but stay in New York

At the end of the week, Steve Cohen, ready to spend like crazy, said he had not started negotiating with Jacob deGrom for a contract extension.

It was amazing considering the guy is willing to spend and deGrom is the best player in his organization.

What you need to know is that deGoat has three years on his contract, but he could give up the last two (and more than $60 million) to become a free agent in less than a year.

And that’s exactly what he intends to do: take advantage of his autonomy in a year, but to sign at a high price in New York.

The pitcher, who has already been named starting pitcher for his team for the first game of 2022, said he did not want to negotiate during the season, which explains his owner’s statement.

He does not want to negotiate right away and this is normal: his value is not at its maximum. deGrom is coming back from a good injury and he probably wants to prove himself in order to show that he is healthy and that he deserves an impressive contract.

I imagine that with the gold bridge that Max Scherzer received from the Mets a few months ago, deGrom feels he, too, can have his piece of the pie.

And that’s normal.

We also imagine that the Mets had planned the coup and that they know that the Scherzer contract will serve as the basis of negotiations for deGrom.

However, we must not forget that there is a risk for the Mets, even if the guy says he wants to end his career in the only uniform he has known. Look at the Braves and Freddie Freeman…

  • The Jorge Soler file is gaining importance.
  • Kyle Schwarber is in demand.
  • Gerrit Cole will not squabble with Josh Donaldson.
  • Nelson Cruz is happy to be in Washington.
