Jacob deGrom is nowhere near a return to play

As in all seasons since 1973 (a bit of exaggeration here, but he plays so little that he could certainly have stretched his career over fifty years), Jacob deGrom finds himself on the injured list.

And there’s still no indication of when the right-hander will return to play with the Texas Rangers. However, it seems very likely that his absence will last longer than the fortnight.

The 34-year-old is eligible to return to the pitch next Sunday, but don’t count on that. The manager of the Texas training, Bruce Bochy, does not want to rush things.

We are going very slowly with him and we are going to test him.

deGrom left the April 28 game against the New York Yankees with an elbow inflammation.

As mentioned in the introduction, it’s Groundhog Day for the Rangers gunner, who has made just 26 regular season starts in his last two seasons with the New York Mets.

And the frustration is felt in the main interested party.

Obviously, the goal was not to go on the injured list. The goal was to make 30+ starts and put this team in a position to win. It’s disappointing not to be able to do that now.

But he remains optimistic.

Everything looks good structurally. I want to play. There is some inflammation, so the goal is to clear it up in the next few days. So we can remain optimistic on that.

The pitching ace signed a five-year, $185 million contract during the most recent offseason. It’s expensive to start with.
