A few weeks ago, the Padres and Fernando Tatis Jr. chatted about his position on the field when he returns to play. Will he be a shortstop or an outfielder?
When you read between the lines, you realize that the Padres are probably more intent on taking advantage of his versatility and having him play in both positions.
With Trent Grisham (centerfield) hitting from the left and Ha-Seong Kim (hitting from the right), Tatis Jr. could play in both positions to play every day depending on the pitcher’s arm.
But that plan could fall through if the San Diego Padres were ever interested in one of the big names at shortstop in the market. And according to Jon Heyman, it now does.
With the Padres, we are no surprise. The club, for a few years, is often in the action to improve and there, it is testing the ground.
Such a personnel move would officially send Tatis Jr. into the field full-time. How would he take it?
On the other hand, he’s in no position to get angry right now.
I wonder how far the Padres can afford so many big contracts. After all, Manny Machado and Tatis Jr. earn at least $300m each and the club also wants to sign Juan Soto long term.
Would adding a Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts, Trea Turner or Dansby Swanson do well given the club’s salary package? I don’t know… but let’s not take them out of the race too quickly, because they know how to surprise us.
When the Padres are big hits, it’s a sign that winter has begun in baseball.
