How bad do the Red Sox need Teoscar Hernandez?

The more time passes, the more we understand that the Red Sox clearly have their noses at the heart of the Teoscar Hernandez case.

Other clubs are also there (including the Dodgers), which could push the club that signs him to offer him a pact lasting four seasons.

The Sox seem aggressive in the matter. If they end up winning the Derby, they would add a big right-handed hitter who would help protect the lefties at the top of the lineup.

Would Teoscar improve the team? Certainly.

But the question to ask is whether Hernandez is the best possibility to improve the club. In other words, why an outfielder?

Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo, who cover the Red Sox, both agree that Hernandez is a very good hitter, but that fielding isn't a problem there.

What it takes is reinforcement on the mound. And the money you don't put on your hands, it's a strange choice for the Red Sox, right?

The club already has a hard time spending…

With Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, Tyler O'Neil and Masataka Yoshida already there, it's clear that Teoscar's potential arrival would force the Sox to make a trade.

Unless the Sox sign the outfielder to trade another for real reinforcement on the mound, signing an outfielder may indeed not be the way to go.

The crux of the matter, after all, is the mound. That's how it works in major league baseball.

If the club is able to sign free agents on the mound and afford a guy like Teo, that would be ideal for everyone in Boston. But it takes a Jordan Montgomery or a Blake Snell…
