Guardians trade Cal Quantrill to Rockies

Although the market for transactions and free agents has been relatively calm until now, a small jolt has just occurred.

Indeed, the Cleveland Guardians traded pitcher Cal Quantrill to the Colorado Rockies for minor league catcher Kody Huff.

The Canadian had been designated for assignment by Cleveland and he will now find himself in the Rockies’ starting rotation. He will probably have a secure position.

The Guardians have an array of young pitchers, which made Quantrill available. Furthermore, the team was not prepared to pay him more than the six million dollars he would have obtained in arbitration for the next season.

The right-hander compiled a record of four wins against seven losses, in addition to posting an earned run average of 5.24 in 99 and two-thirds innings of work spread over 19 games in 2023. He, however, maintained a run average career ERA of 3.54 before the start of the last campaign.

The 28-year-old had an injury-plagued 2023 season, landing on the injured list twice, just a year after winning 15 games and helping the Guardians win the American League Central title.

Quantrill was acquired by Cleveland at the 2020 trade deadline from the San Diego Padres.

For his part, Huff, 22, spent last season with Fresno in the California League. He had a .262 batting average with five home runs and 36 RBIs in 86 games. The Rockies selected him in the seventh round of the 2022 draft after he played three seasons at Stanford.
