Do you remember Greg Bird? We’re talking about a former big Yankees prospect in the mid-2010s who played first base and, more importantly, was seen as a future high-quality power hitter.
Unfortunately, despite a good start to his career, injuries derailed the rest of things, so much so that he did not play in the Majors again after 2019.
He had also become a Blue Jays ‘legend’ during training camp in 2022 and some thought may have seen him earn a position with the team, but he was ultimately cut.
Why am I talking to you about Greg Bird on this Sunday afternoon? The reason is very simple: earlier today, the Capitales de Québec announced that Bird would join them for the rest of the current campaign.
His acquisition follows the announcement of the injury of outfielder Marc-Antoine Lebreux, who will not play again this year.
Even though the trade deadline has passed in the Frontier League, it is possible for teams to make a single personnel move after it to replace an injured player for the season. However, the acquired player must play substantially the same position as the injured player.
This means that Bird will play as an outfielder in Quebec, but we also risk seeing him as a hitter of choice.
Lebreux had a very good season (.293 / .421 / .465) and his absence will hurt the Capitals, but in Bird, the club gets their hands on a guy who has a good track record. He could quickly become a very good hitter in this formation.
Recall that the Capitals currently have a record of 52-30 and that they are fighting for first place in the East. Bird will join the club and should be in action for his team’s next game, when the Quebec team will face the Tri-City Valley Cats on Tuesday.
I can’t wait to see what the former Yankees will be able to offer his new formation.
