The preseason games have not yet started and the New York Yankees infirmary is filling up visibly. The latest in line to appear there is Frankie Montas.
We already knew that the right-handed gunner would not start the season. But now an operation could keep him out of the game for the whole season.
This changes the plans of the Bronx Bombers, who were planning to place Montas as the fifth starter, which would have given a lot of depth in the rotation.
General Manager Brian Cashman is now in solution mode. And in this context, the name of Gleyber Torres surfaces once again.
Even if the principal concerned does not wish to be compromised, he is more and more likely to change his address against a pitcher.
It’s that the Yankees have a surplus of infielders, with the presence of DJ LeMahieu, Isaiah Kiner-Falefa, Josh Donaldson, Oswaldo Cabrera, Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza. And with the search for a starter looming, Torres is the lamb to sacrifice.
In this case, LeMahieu could take a seat at second base, while the youngsters (Volpe and Peraza) would fight for the shortstop position. For their part, IKF and Donaldson could share playing time at third base, where Kiner-Falefa should ALWAYS evolve.
And on a financial level, exchanging Torres` ($9.95 million in 2023) would allow the Yankees to seek reinforcements on the mound without exceeding the last threshold of the luxury tax.
Torres knows very well that his days are numbered on New York soil.
- The Phillies and Seranthony Dominguez agree.
- The Blue Jays want to take advantage of the new regulations.
- Abraham Toro is ready for what’s next.
