Gleyber Torres and the Yankees not discussing a contract extension

For the past few years, at almost every trade deadline and off-season, Gleyber Torres' name has been floating around in trade rumors.

And this risks happening again in 2024. This is because the New York Yankees and the main interested party, who is entering the last year of his contract with the Bronx Bombers, are not even discussing a contract extension Right now.

Speaking to the media Thursday in Tampa, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman only reiterated the obvious.

He’s our second baseman this year, I haven’t had any conversations about that. Who knows? I don't know if we will negotiate during the season. So far, there have been no discussions on this subject.

Certainly, the Venezuelan has just had one of his best seasons in the majors. In 158 games, he maintained a .273 batting average while hitting 25 long balls and producing 68 runs.

The 27-year-old could therefore prove to be an important part of the puzzle of the World Series in 2024.

However, with outfielder Juan Soto also becoming a free agent at the end of the next campaign, the priority is not to retain Torres' services long term.

Additionally, with the lack of depth in the starting rotation and the surplus of infield players in New York, Torres could very well be the lamb sacrificed in order to finally move to the next level.

If I were you, I wouldn't stake my house on the fact that Torres will finish the season in the Big Apple, much less that he will be back in 2025.
