The 2023 season is one to forget for New York Yankees players. And that of Giancarlo Stanton is no exception.
As with almost every campaign, the big hitter was not spared by the Bombardiers fans, who missed almost half of the season and saw his performances experience little ups and big downs.
However, the evening of yesterday (Tuesday) made him forget the time for a moment the last months. It’s that the giant hit the 400e circuit of his career and the boos of the more than 31,000 fans gathered at Yankee Stadium then turned into a standing ovation.
Gerrit Cole, who had another performance bringing him closer to the Cy Young Trophy, was one of the first Yankees players to congratulate Stanton on his return to the dugout.
Both players hail from California and quickly bonded, even when they were National League opponents.
Stanton thus became the 58th player in MLB history to hit 400 career home runs and the fourth fastest to hit the mark, taking just 1,520 games to get there. Only Mark McGwire, Babe Ruth and Alex Rodriguez were faster.
Stanton’s long ball not only gave the Yankees the lead against the Detroit Tigers, breaking a 1-1 tie, but it ultimately gave the Bronx representatives the victory, who won by the score of 5 to 1.
With this gain, the Yankees now have a record of 69 wins and 69 losses and still find themselves seven and a half games from the last place giving the right to participate in the playoffs.
All of this will certainly bring some balm to Stanton and the Yankees’ season of misery, but it won’t erase it.
