Despite his defensive deficiencies and his inability to generate any offense for two years, Gary Sanchez is like a cat, he has nine lives.
The proof? After being released by the San Francisco Giants earlier this month, the catcher just signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets.
So it’s a return to New York for Sanchez, but this time in Queens, he who spent most of his career with the Bronx Bombers.
Mets general manager Billy Eppler was with the Yankees when Sanchez was playing in the minor leagues. He may have seen something you don’t see and the risk isn’t great.
It’s a deep move for the Mets, who already have Tomas Nido, Francisco Alvarez (MLB’s number one prospect) and Omar Narvaez in the number two position.
Nothing is guaranteed for the Kraken, since unless there is a major change in its performance, it will remain in the minors. It will be up to him to try to find the stroke of the stick that has characterized him in the past.
As my colleague Charles-Alexis Brisebois puts it so well, it’s lucky the Saint-Louis Cardinals didn’t sign Sanchez, otherwise the Willson Contreras saga would be far from over.
