The San Francisco Giants decided to add depth at the receiver position this afternoon. How?
By offering a minor league contract to veteran Gary Sanchez, who was still a free agent despite starting the season.
According to Ken Rosenthal, he will report to the camp of the minors of his, in Arizona. Thereafter, he will join a club of minors.
If he doesn’t get a promotion in San Francisco by May 1, he could opt out of his contract to become a free agent again.
Recall that while waiting to find a contract in the MLB, Sanchez had signed a contract in a winter league in the Dominican Republic.
A few years ago, it would have been hard to believe that on his first opportunity as a free agent, he was going to have to settle for a deal minors in March, but here we are.
The receiver is no longer exactly the same player as before and his few flashes of genius at the offensive level no longer exactly counterbalance his huge defensive deficiencies.
Buster Posey’s club was therefore forced to take a receiver that was very different from that of recent years because the development of young receivers is a concern at the moment.
Sanchez, who spent the last season in Minnesota, will have to do well on his chance in California if he doesn’t want it to be his last.
It’s up to him to play.
