Gary Sanchez, over the past few days, has been slated for assignment by the Mets to make room for Francisco Alvarez. This had the effect of dropping Gary from the 40-player roster.
When a player with a big contract is DFA, it is clear that no one is going to claim him on waivers. But when a Gary Sanchez is DFA, there’s a chance.
And now a peach tree took the bait.
The San Diego Padres, a club that needs help behind the plate, decided to take a chance with the catcher.
This means that his contract of $ 1.5 million (about a million dollars pro rata) is absorbed by the San Diego Padres.
The Mets will have paid the receiver of peanuts, finally.
The Padres haven’t delivered the goods since the start of the season and Sanchez isn’t going to make his new club’s pitchers any better. Offensively, he is no longer what he was.
It will therefore simply fill a sweater.
He knows how to behave in MLB and that’s probably why the Padres chose to claim him, at the expense of a youngster who is not used to it.
Recall that in April, Sanchez signed a minor contract with the Giants. He played in the AAA before being released and playing with the Syracuse (AAA) and New York Mets.
