Since the start of the off-season, some clubs are really trying to move to the next level. The Royals and Tigers are in the mix.
But we also have to add the Reds to the group.
Nick Martinez and Emilio Pagan are pitchers who were signed earlier in the offseason, as was infielder Jeimer Candelario.
And now Frankie Montas is also a member of the Reds.
He signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati team for the next campaign, which will allow him to improve the mound.
The amount? $16 million… plus performance bonuses.
I don't know if the amount scared the Yankees, who were expected to give him a chance to return to the Bronx, but let's say it was a high price.
After all, in 2023, Montas has only pitched one and a third innings. A major injury prevented him from doing his job.
A one-year contract was to be expected, but at that price? And to think that it is the Reds who offer him…
There is a chance of seeing him live up to the contract, but let's say that the risk is still present for the Reds.
It's a different risk than the one taken by the Braves, who acquired Chris Sale, but still: There's a risk for Cincinnati.
It reminds me a little of the one-year, $13 million contract signed by Luis Severino with the Mets.
Let's see if he can stay healthy and get back on track. And if so, he could break the bank in a year, when his contract is up.
To be continued, therefore.
