The misfortune of some is the happiness of others. Thanks to Frankie Montas, who will miss the first month of the season (at least), a position has opened up in the Yankees’ rotation.
It’s a chance to seize for several candidates who had little hope of breaking through since the signing of Carlos Rodon.
Domingo German
If the situation remains as it is, Domingo German would have a slight edge over the competition. He has experience as a starter and had it not been for his escapades off the pitch and a few injuries, he had great potential.
Before his suspension for domestic violence, he collected 18 victories in 2019. Since then, he has sought redemption, but it is not always easy in front of New York fans, who have not forgiven him for his misconduct.
Last year, in 14 starts, he maintained an ERA of 3.61, which is not bad. If he knows a good camp, the position will be his. This is probably his last chance to get back into good graces. It’s up to him to seize it.
Clarke Schmidt
The Yankees haven’t given up on making Clarke Schmidt a starter, despite using him primarily as relief in his first major league season. He has an excellent curveball that allowed him to collect 56 strikeouts in 57 and two-thirds innings in his rookie year.
The former first-round pick will certainly have every opportunity to prove what he can do as a starter in camp. To get the job, he will have to demonstrate that he is more reliable than German.
Deivi Garcia
Promoted with the Yankees at the end of 2020, Deivi Garcia seemed like a safe bet for the future. However, he has only disappointed since. It might cause a surprise.
There are several internal solutions to compensate for the absence of Frankie Montas. However, don’t be surprised if Brian Cashman adds an arm or two to shuffle the cards at training camp.
