The window to make the playoffs is closing on the New York Yankees. With the offense unable to find a way to produce, the pressure is back on the pitching corps doing what it can to keep the team afloat.
But that is not enough. And the subsequent losses of Anthony Rizzo and Carlos Rodon combined with the rout of Luis Severino do nothing to help the current situation.
A breath of fresh air will therefore probably be necessary to change things.
And this wind could come from the recall of young Everson Pereira from the AAA level. According to a few sources close to the team, his promotion will arrive shortly this season.
If it worked with Davis Schneider at the Toronto Blue Jays, there’s no reason it shouldn’t work with Pereira, who is far superior.
Since the start of this campaign, the Bombardiers have been in dire need of left field, with Billy McKinney and Jake Bauers clearly not doing the job. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is doing not so badly, but it’s really not ideal.
Pereira is a fit perfect for this role, considering his speed, defensive play and ability to hit the ball with power all the way, assets that the Yankees have been looking for in their left fielders for a long time.
The 22-year-old could also play in center field, but the need is on the left.
Pereira has been with the Yankees since signing as an amateur in 2017. This year he has maintained a .925 OPS in addition to shelling 15 long balls at the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
Whether the Yankees stay in the hunt for the fall dance or not, Pereira has to come to the Bronx.
And quick.
