While he argues that his reading of the strike zone and his takeoff velocity may suggest that there is a deeper talent, McDaniel draws an early comparison with a less bulky Corey Seager.
With what he’s got, he’s an above-average hitter who plays at the most in-demand position, and he’s good at everything. If things click really well for him, he could hit .280 and 25 home runs from shortstop.
With his assets and his physique, Mayer looks a little more like a (still precocious here) Christian Yelich. The ESPN reporter doesn’t believe the Red Sox player will reach the level of two-time National batting champion, but believes it’s not impossible.
Not to mention that several coaches had pointed out the leadership qualities within his teammates and that he could become a strong presence within his group.
The least we can say is that Xander Bogaerts will have some competition in a few years and that the shortstop position is potentially good for the future of the Red Sox.
