Edwin Encarnacion was an important player in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays. In eight seasons, the one who played 999 regular season games in blue still has 239 homers behind the tie in the Queen City.
He also has four series circuits, including this one. It is one of the most important in the history of the club.
It will be remembered that after the 2016 season, he chose to leave the organization to play in Cleveland. The Jays were starting to feel their window closing and let’s just say that without the Parrot, it wasn’t exactly easy.
Losing him as a free agent also hurt as the club were unable to trade him for an attractive return.
Brief. All that to say that today, EE is retired, but he still seems to have the Jays at heart since he will be at the Blue Jays camp in Dunedin next month. He will likely be a guest coach.
Pat Hentgen will also be a guest coach. This means that with Paul Quantrill, Don Mattingly and Victor Martinez who are also within the organization, the players have resources.
But the plan is to have Encarnacion a little more often.
As Shi Davidi reports, he and the Jays are exploring the possibility of him getting a bigger role in the organization.
Encarnacion is well-liked, endearing and knows a thing or two about baseball. He can be an interesting resource, especially for power hitters who speak Spanish.
Yeah, I may be thinking a bit of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. here. After all, both guys play in the same position and have a similar role…
- Manny Machado wants out of his contract to buy eggs.
- Albert Pujols is well retired.
- Did Xander Bogaerts sign for $160 million in Boston a year ago? Maybe.
