In recent weeks, Tony La Russa has had to take time off from the White Sox entourage to deal with heart issues. And I’m speaking medically, not romantically.
And since that time, we haven’t seen him again. He took care of himself and he recently announced that the club, which is going nowhere, will be managed by Miguel Cairo by the end of the season.
It was his doctors, to avoid stress, who recommended this to him.
That said, we wondered what that meant for 2023. Was the 78-year-old man going to have the OK from the doctors to honor his last year of contract?
Chicago fans hoped not, of course.
But now logic should prevail since everything indicates that he will not be back at all (no role) in Chicago in 2023.
It’s unclear if Miguel Cairo will get the full-time job.
I don’t know if it’s “constructive dismissal” due to illness, but if so, that’s fine with me. I have no problem with the Sox not actually firing the second-winningest manager in MLB history.
But he has to give up his place, he who was no longer following at all. During his two years in Chicago, the club no longer followed.
The guys deserve a more current manager.
