When DJ LeMahieu arrived in New York a few years ago, he became an incredible asset. Versatile defensively and reliable at bat, he made Brian Cashman look like a genius.
But for the past few seasons, injuries have not played in his favor. He is therefore no longer the player he can be for the Bombardiers.
Last year, for example, his fractured foot prevented him from finishing the season. It was too bad for him, for Aaron Judge (who needed protection) and for everyone in the Bronx.
But the good news for the club is that Aaron Boone has good news to offer regarding his state of health: he is doing well at the moment.
The Yankees manager expects LeMahieu to start the season healthy. He’s seen videos of the former Rockies in practice…and he looks good.
If so, that will give options at second base, but also at third base, where Josh Donaldson didn’t dominate in 2022.
Although he didn’t have surgery, LeMahieu needed time to heal. What Boone will have to do, though, is rest his veteran strategically to prevent him from getting hurt again.
It will therefore be to follow in 2023 since with a healthy DJ, the Yankees would be a frankly more dangerous team on the ball field.
