Bryan Reynolds took the Pirates by surprise when he asked to be traded earlier this winter. With just over a month to go before training camps open, what about his claim?
The Pirates are still little or not interested in this avenue. Although they did not seek to sell it, that did not stop the phone of the general manager, Ben Cherington, from ringing.
The demand is still very high for Reynolds, but what the Pirates demand in return would be unrealistic. And no one can blame them. With him, Oneil Cruz and Ke’Bryan Hayes, they saw themselves finally being competitive in the next few years.
Reynolds has dominated all of his team’s offensive categories in 2022. It’s only fitting that they don’t want to take a step back by trading some of their core for long-term prospects.
However, a .262 batting average and 27 homers is not such a rare commodity. Should Pittsburgh really decide to trade him, expect a reasonable price.
The Yankees in the game
The Yankees are probably the team most interested in Reynolds’ services. He would be the ideal option to fill the hole in left field. An offer including Oswald Peraza, Oswaldo Cabrera and a few prospects could make the Pirates flinch.
As we learned earlier this week, Reynolds and the Pirates are far from agreeing on a contract extension. The only option will probably be a transaction. It only remains to know when it will take place. Waiting too long could lower the bids.
