Deion Sanders: His Former Braves Teammates Knew He Would Be a Good Coach

For several weeks, the sports world has had its eyes glued to what is happening at the University of Colorado. The reason? The varsity football team, which only won one game last year, started its season with a 3-0 record.

There true reason? Deion Sanders, who had an illustrious NFL career while also having a successful MLB career, is at the helm of the club this year.

It’s a safe bet that you know Sanders, but for those who don’t, let me sum it up for you this way: his personality is even stronger than that of Ronald Acuña Jr. and if the cameras like him, know that he likes the cameras back.

We’re talking about someone who nicknamed himself Prime Time. Nothing less.

And since Sanders is working miracles as a coach, it’s certainly getting everyone talking. In fact, even in the baseball world, we talk about Coach Primewho notably had good years with the Atlanta Braves.

What is interesting, however, is that Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, who were passing through the Flippin’ Bats Podcast and who played with Sanders in the 1990s, aren’t necessarily surprised to see Sanders excel as a coach.

Because in fact, the warning signs had been there for quite a while.

According to Smoltz, the former NFL star had all the intangibles, experience and motivation to become a great coach. And when we watch him at work, it’s obvious: Sanders is capable of getting the best from his protégés.

As for Glavine, he insists Sanders was an exceptional teammate. He might seem full of himself in public, but with his teammates, he had heart in the right place.

And that’s without taking into account his exceptional ability to market himself.

But clearly, when you look at what Sanders is doing with the University of Colorado team, you see he’s doing it for the right reasons. He manages to motivate his players brilliantly and that translates into results.

With his two sons (including the team’s quarterback) and the athlete Travis Hunter, unfortunately injured at the moment, who excels both as a receiver and as a cornerback (a bit like what Sanders managed to do in the NFL at times), he is building something special.

For those interested, the University of Colorado is in action this afternoon, when it will face the University of Oregon in its biggest test of the season, starting at 3:30 p.m. I recommend that you just listen to it for a few minutes just to understand the atmosphere: it’s pure Deion Sanders.

And clearly, his former Braves teammates aren’t particularly surprised to see him enjoy success. I hope it continues, because in the end, it’s the sport that comes out a winner with another great story.
