Even though the Dodgers have the money, they don’t spend madly on the free range market every year.
In fact, they often make short-term offers to stars, but with a crazy salary average. It rarely works.
Yes, they have big contracts (Mookie Betts, for example), but if you look, it’s rarely for free agents who pick LA out of 30 teams. Freddie Freeman and Clayton Kershaw (who, in fact, doesn’t really seem to want to leave the Dodgers) are the most notable cases.
Steve Cohen employs the opposite strategy.
All that to say that the Dodgers, now that the big wave has passed to the free agent level, could watch what’s left and go shopping.
A guy like Dansby Swanson is believed to be in the club’s sights at the moment, according to reports from Jon Heyman.
The Cubs are an option (Swanson’s wife is a sportswoman who plays in Chicago) and the Braves (his former club and hometown roster) are too, up to a point.
In fact, if the Dodgers want a shortstop (via the free agent market), Swanson is their best bet. Why?
Because he costs less than Correa (the club wants to save money to try to sign Shohei Ohtani in a year) and because the fans don’t want Correa because of the scandal.
If the Dodgers want stability at shortstop, this is their best bet. Will the price be reasonable, though?
