The Toronto Blue Jays have signed reliever Chad Green.
The former Yankees is currently recovering from Tommy John-type surgery, which means he will miss the first few months of the season.
Basically, we are talking about a two-year contract valued at $8.5 million. This will make the Jays pay even more of the luxury tax.
But as he is recovering from a Tommy John suffered last May, the team must protect itself… and it’s the same for the player.
In fact, the second year is a conditional player option that Greene can take if the Jays decline the three-year team option first. And if everyone declines the options, the Jays get two option years at a higher salary.
In short, it’s complex… and it will depend on his state of health in the coming months.
You should also know that the physical tests have already been passed, which means that the club expects his rehabilitation process to go well.
Green is what the Jays are looking for: a guy who generates momentum in butter. He is also able to throw in the East of the American, he who spent his entire career in the Majors (2016-2022) in the Bronx.
The pitcher was drafted by the Jays in 2010 before going to college. He was then selected three years later by the Tigers, the club with which he developed in the minors before heading to New York.
It is therefore a good risk on the part of the Jays since even if the enclosure is full, the club wants guys of his caliber. It will be an internal struggle.
