The Carlos Correa case should be coming to an end. Anyway, we hope.
In the last 48 hours, we have learned that the file should indeed be concluded shortly. Whether it’s because he will officially sign in New York or because he will become a free agent again, the conclusion with the Mets is near.
And for Mets fans, the good news is that the player is in line to stay with the Mets. Rumor has it that Steve Cohen and Scott Boras should find common ground.
But that can change quickly.
It is important to remember that Carlos Correa likes visibility and that playing in New York has always been one of his goals.
That’s why, as Jon Heyman reports, the former Astros and Twins knocked on the Yankees’ door recently, before the surprise offer from the Mets before the holidays.
In fact, last winter and this winter, he wanted to play in New York. There was no obvious path with the Mets due to Francisco Lindor’s presence (and before Cohen decided to spend like he did this winter), which explains the Yankees’ interest.
And at one point, we thought the Yankees might want to hit a big shot at shortstop…but the club went with Carlos Rodon.
The Yankees have young shortstop prospects and the Astros scandal is not going down well with fans. So Correa wanted more of that to happen than the other way around.
This explains the absence of big rumors for a few years.
What we note is that Alex Rodriguez, Correa’s idol, did the same thing as him: he started in the West, he changed clubs before moving to third base to go to play most of his career in New York.
At least, that’s what Correa tries to do.
A-Rod, who tried to buy the Mets recently, is now an NBA owner. And ironically, Minnesota is where he now works.
Does this explain why Correa gave up so quickly in the case of the Giants, but is holding his own with the Mets? That may be part of the answer, indeed.
