When we look at the history of the St. Louis Cardinals, we notice that the club has always been quite good. In fact, if we exclude shortened seasons, we have to go back to 1978 (!) to find the last time the team won less than 70 games in a season.
And again, he had won 69. We agree that we have often seen worse: just last year, eight teams won less than 69 games and the Marlins won exactly 69.
That said, this year is disaster in Missouri. THE cards are 38-52 and on track to win 68 games this season. It’s below the standards set in town, let’s say.
And with the trade deadline looming on August 1, there are some big decisions to be made. John Mozeliak, the club’s president of baseball operations, made no secret of it: the Cardinals will be on the selling side.
We agree that it is not in the habits of the house.
The odds are pretty good that Jordan Montgomery, Jordan Hicks and Jack Flaherty will be traded to the highest bidder. All three will be free agents at the end of the season, so the cards have no reason to keep them.
Adam Wainwright will be too, but clearly he won’t be traded.
However, there is a good chance that other guys will leave. Tyler O’Neill, who does not seem in the good graces of his manager anyway, is also at risk of leaving, he who will be free as air in a year and a half.
And the big question is whether Paul Goldschmidt, also a post-2024 free agent, will be one of the guys leaving by August 1. The reigning National MVP is having another strong season and, at nearly 36 years old, his value will never be so high again.
Clearly, Mozeliak is going to get calls about his star player. The question is whether he will dare to trade it.
In short, for a very rare time in their history, the Cardinals intend to be on the selling side at the next trade deadline.
The question now is how well they will sell.
- The question everyone is asking.
