Buck Showalter believes the Mets shouldn't have given up in 2023

Despite the fact that he had one year remaining on his contract, Buck Showalter will not be at the helm of the New York Mets during the next campaign. This is because after the hiring of David Stearns as the team's new president of baseball operations, the organization decided to move on in the case of the manager.

And on the podcast platform Foul Territory, the 67-year-old man returned to his time in Queens. According to him, the New York staff should not have abandoned the race for the playoffs in 2023.

I still think if we had stayed the course we would have slipped in as best second. That's always what I'll think. When Tommy Pham was traded, that's when I knew we were abandoning ship, so to speak.

We can understand this, since the representatives of Queens were always in the game and none skipper doesn't want to give up in the middle of a season.

Another aspect that the veteran manager did not understand during his time in New York is managing the workload of his players.

We had a guy who hit a triple and two doubles and some people came up to me and said he probably needed a day off because he was running around the bases too much. So what do you want me to say?

Showalter talks here about the September 12 game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when Brandon Nimmo finished the game with three hits in four at-bats, in addition to a walk.

I didn't quite understand that one. I said okay, you're going to tell Brandon Nimmo that he's not going to play today because he did too well last night.

THE skipper may be old school, but this one is absolutely right. Advanced statistics take up way too much space in today's baseball.

Besides, the little geniuses didn't get what they wanted, because Nimmo was playing the next day.

Well done, Buck.
