Buck Martinez could retire at the end of this campaign

During the presentation of Sunday’s game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox, Dan Shulman confirmed that he would describe the Blue Jays meetings on ESPN Radio during the playoffs.

This means that it will be the trio made up of Buck Martinez, Pat Tabler and Hazel Mae who will automatically be on Sportsnet television.

However, the autumnal dance could very well be the last time the three protagonists will be reunited.

Indeed, Martinez, who was diagnosed with cancer in April this year and has missed much of the season, told The Globe and Mail last week that there was a chance it could be his last year describing and analyzing Jays games.

“It has nothing to do with Rogers. It’s just me. You know, I’ve been through a lot. And, you know, my wife and I had a lot of discussions about it. I do not know. »

We can understand it. His illness certainly made him think.

“It made me realize that there is no need to dwell on small things. I am 73 years old. I had a phenomenal life. I was very lucky in many ways. I’ve never been sick, and I know how lucky I am, and I see life a little differently now. I don’t care. I just understand that I have been privileged and I will appreciate every opportunity I have in the future. »

One thing is for sure, Martinez will be in the Sportsnet studios for as long as the Jays are alive in the 2022 playoffs, no matter where and no matter who the opponent is.

For the future, it will be his decision and the supporters of the Jays will not be outdone with his successor.
