As you may know, the Blue Jays do not spin the perfect happiness at the salary level with Bo Bichette. The shortstop player complained about the system used last year and this year, in his first year as an umpire, he lined up to go for it.
He was asking for $7.5 million and the Blue Jays were offering him $2.5 million less for the 2023 season.
The session was supposed to take place on Thursday, but it looks like the Jays and the infielder managed to avoid salary arbitration by signing a multi-year contract.
We are talking about maybe three years.
He could not avoid salary arbitration on the basis of a one-year contract only: it took something over several years.
If it is indeed three years, there will therefore be a projection of his contract of 2023, 2024 and 2025 to form a contract leading him to the gates of autonomy.
Because it must be specified: the Blue Jays are not going to buy a year of autonomy with a potential three-year agreement. He’ll still become a free agent at the end of the 2025 season if he doesn’t sign long-term by then.
But at least he won’t have to fight every winter for his annual salary. It’s already taken and it’s a good thing for everyone.
Will this lead to a long-term contract to keep him in Toronto for the long term? That’s another file.
To be continued, therefore.
