The fifty-seventh Super Bowl is exactly seven days away, which means the start of MLB training camp is upon us. Finally!
On the sidelines of the American Football Finals, the father of prolific Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes described how his son’s baseball training forged one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
On his first practice playing shortstop, he threw the ball across the infield and hit the first baseman right between the eyes, breaking his glasses. So they told him to start throwing the ball with a three-quarter motion and then we know the rest…
Mahomes Sr. made his major league pitching debut with the Minnesota Twins in 1992, before roaming between Boston, New York, Chicago and Pittsburgh, not to mention Texas.
His son, meanwhile, played in the bullpen at Texas Tech University after being drafted tenth overall in the 2017 NFL auction.
So baseball has impacted the unorthodox way of throwing a football in the biggest league in the world that Mahomes Jr. has been striving to develop for six years now. His little forward stealth throws can also be likened to throws from shortstop to second baseman to initiate a double play ball.
Hopefully his ankle holds up and he can lift the big trophy for the second time in his career next Sunday.
