As usual, the subway series does not disappoint

The matches between the two teams from New York always give the right to excellent shows. And yesterday’s meeting was no exception.

The Mets first took a 5-1 lead thanks to Brandon Nimmo’s home run and Jeff McNeil’s two-run single against a Luis Severino who just hasn’t had it since returning to the game, including due to his lifeless fastball.

The Yankees didn’t give up, however, scoring five runs on six hits in the fifth inning against Max Scherzer.

DJ LeMahieu’s long ball and youngster Anthony Volpe’s double, which had a strong game, spelled the end for the three-time Cy Young Trophy winner, who was booed by Mets fans upon his exit.

As if the tension wasn’t palpable enough, reliever Drew Smith became the second Mets gunner to be ejected this season due to too much sticky stuff on his hands.

Smith never even made a pitch. As he made his way to the mound, he was stopped by officials for a routine examination. The pitcher reached out and pleaded his case, but was ejected by head umpire Bill Miller and will be automatically suspended for ten games.

The Queens reps somehow tried to come from behind in the eighth inning, filling the paths with a single out, but reliever Clay Holmes closed the door in a big way, saving Wandy Peralta’s poor outing in relief .

The Mets thus lost a ninth game in their last ten, while the Yankees found the way to victory after a stay at home below expectations.

Meanwhile in the American League East, the Tampa Bay Rays dropped the flag for the second straight time at Oakland and the Baltimore Orioles continued their momentum by teaching the Toronto Blue Jays a baseball lesson.

The Orioles are now just four short games from the top of the division.

The Subway Series wraps up tonight at Citi Field. For the occasion, Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander will automatically be on the mound.
