Since September 28, 2014, there has been a ghost hovering over the Yankees. It was Derek Jeter’s last career game. Since that day, everyone who has passed through the number 6 position has been treated to a comparison with the legend.
If Didi Gregorius, Gleyber Torres or Isiah Kiner-Falefa have not suffered too much from their comparisons with Jeter, it is because they have never been labeled “shortstop of the future”. The same cannot be said of Anthony Volpe.
For several years, the organization has spoken of him as a gem. When they became available, virtually all of the sport’s best were turned up in that position, to make way for Volpe.
The result? After just 14 games, Jeter’s ghost goes after Volpe. Critics of his game or his attitude are raining on social networks. Volpe is not as good as Jeter defensively. Jeter had better contacts. Pereza would have been a better choice…
The last attack of the day: Volpe smiled at the press conference, despite the defeat of his people. Jeter wouldn’t have done that.
I don’t understand who can blame him for that. The kid just hit his first career home run. He has the right to his 10 minutes of happiness. No?
Yankees fans are way too intense sometimes. Anthony Volpe will never be Derek Jeter. Nevertheless, nothing says that he will never be one of the best in his profession. Breathe through the nose. But for the crackers, Jeter had no homer after 14 games.
