The New York Yankees try as best they can to keep the fort during the absence of their captain and the other sailors who are missing due to injuries.
In this context, healthy players, such as Anthony Volpe, must compensate for these more or less long absences. However, that’s really not the case for the young shortstop.
Volpe currently has the worst goal attendance average in MLB and the third-worst batting average in MLB. He also brings his poor stick defensively, having made seven errors so far in 2023.
This is what makes many say that he should return to the AAA level to rebuild his confidence.
But not so fast.
It is true that Volpe is looking for himself at the moment. But a demotion would only make things worse for the one who has nothing left to prove in the minor ranks.
What he needs is rest, while continuing to learn in the Majors. Volpe has already played 67 games this season in a very important role, that of shortstop player.
A little hindsight won’t hurt. A little stint on the injured list or having only one or two starts a week would do him a lot of good.
Meanwhile, the Bronx Bombers could and should recall Oswald Peraza, who is currently burning Triple-A.
A slump for a 22-year-old is completely normal. Volpe has proven he can play in MLB and will return to his early season standards shortly.
The Yankees must not panic, however, and they must manage the file as it should.
