Anthony Volpe could be the Yankees’ shortstop this year

While their shopping spree isn’t over, the Yankees will likely have no choice but to look to an inside option for the shortstop position. The big talents that were available have all found takers.

In Isiah Kiner-Falefa they have an insurance policy, but it’s nothing very exciting. An average hitter, IKF showed several shortcomings defensively with his 15 errors in 2022. We understood why he got his Golden Glove while playing at third base.

The young Oswald Peraza, who made his debut with the big club at the end of the season, showed great things. But there again, we are far from Derek Jeter. The Yankees must find another solution.

How about Anthony Volpe? Although he has only 22 games behind the tie at the AAA level, he could get the job. He has long been labeled as a top prospect. It will be interesting to watch his first major training camp.

He is seen as an excellent hitter who could collect around thirty homers per season, while being average defensively. For two years, most of the best shortstops have been on the market, but the Yankees preferred to wait for Volpe’s development.

Despite their young age, Volpe and Peraza will have to board the boat quickly. Otherwise, Brian Cashman will have to look elsewhere. The Yankees are in championship mode, there is no time to waste.
