Anthony Volpe could actually start the MLB season

Anthony Volpe is arguably the New York Yankees’ hottest prospect right now. The young shortstop, who grew up in the Bronx idolizing Derek Jeter, is seen as an important piece of the organization’s future and his potential is quite high.

And this spring, Volpe is a player on a mission. The numbers speak for themselves: he hits the ball with confidence, he hits the trails, he doesn’t make mistakes on defense and he steals bases.

Admittedly, at the start of camp, Volpe was part of an open competition for the position of shortstop, but his two competitors, Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, left with a head start.

However, this spring, he is (by far) the best player among the three. Moreover, he plays very often and he’s consistently top of the lineup, another sign the Yankees like what they see.

Aaron Boone persists and signs that DJ LeMahieu will be the first hitter more often than not, but that doesn’t change the fact that Volpe is showing he’s capable of taking on the role.

And already Volpe’s game speaks for itself, seeing Boone and Aaron Judge openly bragging about the youngster shows the organization loves him.

It’s rare for Judge to make big public statements, after all, so to see him say openly that he wants to see Volpe with the club if he’s the one who helps the Yankees win the most is noteworthy. .

On the other hand, even if the Yankees want to bring Volpe with the big club at the start of the season, there will be work to be done. However, if Kiner-Falefa were to be traded in the coming days, it would open him up to a position on the roster of 40 players, and it would allow him to be one of the 26 players who will play the first game of the season.

There is no indication that a transaction involving IKF is imminent, but there has been some noise surrounding it for a few weeks.

And despite everything, we must not forget that the Yankees have a surplus of players in the infield (which may however be less given that Giancarlo Stanton could play more in the outfield). Trading Gleyber Torres could be a solution, as could sending Oswald Peraza back to the minors.

But despite this, and despite the fact that Volpe has very little experience at the AAA level, there is reason to believe that the Yankees are open to the idea of keeping him in the Majors for the start of the season. season.

The red flags are there, but so are the positive signs.

Maybe Volpe will start the season at AAA, but clearly he leaves quite a calling card and just the fact that it’s still a talking point at this stage of camp is a sign that he’s a special young player. .

I can’t wait to see how the Yankees will handle the file.
