Each year, Scott Boras has many clients who come under his care. In some years, he even managed to sign contracts with a total value of more than a billion dollars.
If he makes around 5% commission per contract, that’s a lot of money.
And you know what? This year will be no exception since the most powerful agent in the world of baseball has many clients who will be free as air.
Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, JD Martinez, Nick Martinez, James Paxton, Sean Manaea and Hyun-Jin Ryu, among others, will be looking for a new contract.
The top four, barring a catastrophe, will earn at least $100 million each. I wonder how much Montgomery will win following his excellent series, but hey.
In an autonomy market that is considered weak, it still has some big names. He doesn’t have Shohei Ohtani, obviously, but hey.
Besides Ohtani, he has the best hitter (Bellinger) and the best pitcher (Snell) already established in the Majors. Yoshinobu Yamamoto might be better, who knows?
It’s not nothing.
Obviously, he will try to get as much as possible for his players, but he will do it by trying to find the best place for each guy.
As he said on MLB Network radio, a ball park where a player has had success is attractive to a guy who is self-reliant.
He notably cited the example of Bryce Harper, who had success in Philly before signing there a few years ago.
Corey Seager, who destroyed everything in Texas in the bubble in 2020, is also a good example.
Remember that he also has, in his stable, two big players who are one year away from autonomy and who will have to sign an imposing contract within the next 15 months: Pete Alonso and Juan Soto.
We’re going to be talking about Boras a lot this winter, then.
