Acquiring Chris Bassitt may have saved Danny Jansen’s job

Since the start of the offseason, we suspect that the Blue Jays have a receiver to trade. The club has three good guys, which is a luxury in MLB.

But at the moment, even if several teams are still looking, many clubs have met their needs. And unless the remaining teams table an offer they can’t refuse, the Jays could ultimately keep their three guys.

Why such a change? Because the club mostly wanted to swap one to fulfill their needs, but right now the club looks happy with what they have in their hands.

And the financial efforts have not been spared.

What changed the situation was above all the arrival of Chris Bassitt via the autonomy market. With such a rotation, the club does not feel the need to sacrifice a receiver unnecessarily.

And from what they say, the arrival of Bassitt could have saved the job of Danny Jansen.

The club won’t trade a receiver (Jansen, obviously) for help on the mound and since Kevin Kiermaier is the club’s center fielder, the club doesn’t seem to feel the need to go after an outfielder at all costs.

I sincerely wonder how Gabriel Moreno is the key to the enigma. Why? Because he is versatile in the field.

Let’s imagine a world where all three guys start the season at the top. Alejandro Kirk can be the DH once in a while, Jansen can be the receiver, and Moreno can play in the outfield, but also in the infield.

Last year in Toronto, he played left, third base and second base in the last game of the year. And since he can also go downstairs when needed, part of me thinks the Jays are going to move him on the field a lot in 2023 if all three receivers stay in town.

  • It’s not the same thing.
