The New York Yankees have had a tradition of secrecy regarding their operations for a long time. And general manager meetings are no exception when owner Hal Steinbrenner talks the talk.
Indeed, the son of the illustrious George Steinbrenner revealed virtually nothing on Tuesday when he met the media to discuss the future of his team,
However, the analysis of his empty words has provided a better understanding of where Aaron Judge fits in the Bombardiers hierarchical structure.
During his press briefing, there were several “Judge and me” references from the owner when talking about the significant changes that were going to take place in the organization soon. Here is an example.
There will be big changes, but again, we’re looking at so many things that there will be changes that some people might not consider big, but Judge and I will make them because we always act that way.
There was never any mention of “Cashman and I” coming from Steinbrenner’s mouth during this interview. And we can understand it, the general manager having been in a vegetative coma for several years and Judge having been awarded a lucrative contract of 360 million dollars.
What Judge thinks about the state of the team and what it should look like in the future is very important to Steinbrenner. Over the past few months, it has become clear that Judge appears to be on the same level of the organizational ladder as Cashman, if not even higher.
And Steinbrenner’s comments only confirmed it. Besides, the team captain has a plan for the future.
I have some ideas. But we’re all going to have to get on with it. It will involve speaking with everyone in the organization, from the minor league staff all the way up. There’s a lot of things we need to work on and get better at, but there’s a lot of positives we’ve seen with these young guys coming in. Now is the time to build on that and start building the next foundation.
The two have already met several times this off-season, although the content of those meetings has remained private.
If it can help the Yankees get back into the elite, why not.
