Last year, in his first year in the Bronx, Josh Donaldson was not up to the task offensively. He was good at third base, but not at bat.
Because of his age (he is currently 37), many people gave up on his case, thinking that the player was no longer suitable for major league baseball.
In fact, even his club tried to pass him on to another team this winter… but since he’s in his last year of a huge contract ($92 million over four years), it’s easier to say than ‘to do.
He is therefore in New York to stay there at the moment and he will continue to evolve under the orders of Aaron Boone. The latter also believes in him to the point of saying that you have to be crazy to think that he cannot get up offensively.
Of course, the manager can’t say otherwise, but he can’t use the phrase “being crazy” in the context either. He seems to believe it.
And Donaldson must believe it. For what? Because the Yankees have options in the infield and if he loses his position, he could have a hard time finding one in the Majors.
- First goal: Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu
- Second goal: Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu
- Third goal: Josh Donaldson, DJ LeMahieu and Isiah Kiner-Falefa
- Shortstop: Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Gleyber Torres
There, I only spoke of the regulars since in addition, three young people (Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe) are trying to break through at shortstop.
The Yankees want to play their shortstops in other positions for versatility and IKF is a great third baseman.
Brief. All that to say the Yankees have options on the table and if Donaldson doesn’t perform, he’ll be on the bench more often than not.
And that, he knows.
