In 2022, Aaron Boone will already be entering his fifth season as manager of the New York Yankees. And during his first four seasons, he can boast of never missing the playoffs.
He came in through the tiny back door for the last two years, but the Yankees were there.
Despite everything, Boone is not really unanimous among the Yankees. Many feel that he is only the puppet of the team’s leaders and that he is preventing his team from playing up to its potential.
Joel Sherman (New York Post) took advantage of an interview with the Yankees manager to ask him what he thought of these comments, and there was a rather emotional response.
Yes, there is a part of these comments that pick me up. Such stories sometimes start with a grain of truth, but in the end, it’s completely ridiculous. I struggle with that…I’ve been in the sport for so long and it’s a facet of the industry that bothers me, yes. -Aaron Boone
It’s true that Boone is the victim of comments that often go way too far. After all, he enjoyed tremendous success in the regular season with a roster that was often decimated by injuries during his reign.
However, it is the cruel reality of the New York market: as long as it does not win a championship, there will be many detractors. It’s the standard among the Yankees, and considering the talent of the group for a few years, the many underperformances must be attributable to it (in part, at least).
And with his new three-year contract, the pressure will be even greater on his shoulders. He already has a few seasons behind the tie: he must now bring his group to the end.
There’s some of that pressure that’s excessive, sure, but Boone will have to show he’s not going to crumble under it. And what better way to do it than winning the World Series?
