In this more than disappointing season for the New York Yankees, the only hope of the Bombardiers supporters remained the fact that this debacle could cause the departure of general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone.
But it looks like one of the worst seasons in over 30 years isn’t enough for both leaders to leave the Bronx.
In fact, there is only one way Boone could be fired, according to four sources with direct knowledge of the inner workings of the Yankees.
Owner Hal Steinbrenner would have to override Cashman and his baseball operations department to veto it. And that’s never happened before with the Yankees.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the general manager (and his four-year contract in his pocket) is not near the door. Same story for the skipper.
Boone is an asset, not part of the problem.
We no longer have the assets we had…
Even if Boone is not the only one to blame for the failures of the Yankees, he is clearly not the man of the situation and the whole baseball world knows it. However, like a cat, the manager has nine lives and we don’t really know how much he’s gone to.
The only reason Boone will most likely stay in the job is because it would challenge the entire New York training system. And God knows the Yankees don’t want to go there, despite it being more than obvious that a rethinking and cleaning up is needed.
What sad management…
Steinbrenner is not currently responding to media interview requests and he will not announce a final decision on Boone’s future until the end of the season.
