First baseman Ryan Zimmerman announced his retirement after 16 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
The team’s first draft pick after moving in 2005, Zimmerman retires as the club’s all-time leader in games played (1,799), runs scored (963), hits (1,846), doubles (417), home runs (284) and RBIs (1061).
Zimmerman also helped the team win the World Series in 2019.
Zimmerman had decided to skip the 2020 season due to COVID-19. He returned to action in 2021, however, maintaining a .243 batting average with 14 home runs and 46 RBIs.
