LOS ANGELES — Jeremy Giambi, who played a few seasons as an outfielder and first baseman in Major League Baseball, died Wednesday at his parents’ home in Southern California, according to a police report. He was 47 years old.
Police responded to a medical emergency call around 11:30 a.m. at a residence in Claremont, east of Los Angeles, Lt. Robert Ewing said. They found Giambi’s lifeless body.
An investigation by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has been opened to determine the cause of death.
The brother of star player Jason Giambi spent six major league seasons with the Kansas City Royals (1998-99), Oakland A’s (2000-02), Philadelphia Phillies (2002) and Chicago Red Sox. Boston (2002-2003).
He batted .263 with 52 home runs and 209 RBIs. His best season came in 2001 with the A’s when he hit .283 with 12 homers and 57 RBIs.
Born on September 30, 1974 in San Jose, he played for Cal State Fullerton University with which he won the University World Series in 1995. He then signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals who selected him in the sixth round of the 1996 draft.
