Travis Hunter wins the Heisman Trophy, an award that recognizes the best college player of the NCAA season college football.
The Colorado receiver/cornerback narrowly edges out Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty. Hunter collects 552 first places against 309 for Jeanty. Since the creation of the trophy, this represents the smallest margin between a winner and his competitor since 2009. That year, former Saints and Ravens running back Mark Ingram narrowly beat Toby Gerhart, former Vikings running back.
Travis Hunter succeeds Jayden Daniels, and joins former Raiders player Charles Woodson, winner of this trophy in 1997, as a player who won the award as an offensive and defensive player.
Travis Hunter, best defender and best receiver too
This isn't the only honor Travis Hunter receives. The Buffaloes do-it-all player also receives the following awards:
– Player of the Year by Journalists (AP)
– player of the year by journalists, NCAA coaches and players (Walter Camp Award)
– best defender of the year (Chuck Bednarik Award)
– best receiver of the year (Fred Biletnikoff Award)
Beyond the visual impression, he also did statistics. He recorded 92 receptions, 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns on offense. On defense, he made 4 interceptions, 11 passes defended and 1 forced fumble. His endurance and determination are also to be commended, since he also played 1,356 snaps (669 defensive, 687 offensive), 434 more than any other NCAA player.
Among the other trophies, Ashton Jeanty can console himself with the award for best university running back (Doak Walker Award). Finalist for the Heisman Trophy, Miami (FL) quarterback Cam Ward wins the trophy for best quarterback of the season (Davey O'Brien Award). A handyman also has his reward, Penn State tight end Tyler Warren wins the title of best tight end of the season (John Mackey Award).
