Last night, the selection committee for the playoffs met to determine the 12 finalists who will compete for the title of NCAA national university champion.
Among the finalists, if we take into account the results of the regular season and the conference champions, the logic is respected. Despite losing in the ACC conference finals to Clemson, SMU was ultimately drafted by the committee. The Mustangs take the number 11 seed, but are ranked 10th in the committee's final rankings.
With its Big 12 championship title, Arizona State is also qualified. The Sun Devils rank 12th, but will be seeded number 4 thanks to this title. Clemson only ranks 16th in the end, but its ACC conference title guarantees it the last place in the playoffs with the number 12 seed.
Alabama's 3 losses are costly
The victim of these teams qualified for the NCAA playoffs is called Alabama. The Crimson Tide lost in the season to ranked Texas and Vanderbilt. But it is the 24-3 defeat against Oklahoma that weighs on the selection. Despite the victory against conference champion Georgia in a spectacular match, Kalen DeBoer's men (photo) were ultimately not consistent enough. This was deplored by athletic director Greg Byrne in a statement on social media, which was subsequently deleted. Miami (FL), Ole Miss and South Carolina are also falling by the wayside.
Among the other qualifiers, in addition to Arizona State, Oregon, Georgia and Boise State will have a week off. The other qualifiers are Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Tennessee and Indiana. These teams will therefore compete in the first round of the NCAA playoffs.
You can find the final table here. The first round of the NCAA playoffs will take place the weekend of December 20 and 21.
