Death of Jerrod Mustaf, former Suns and Paris Basket Racing player

The news was announced on X by Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson then subsequently by several New York media: Jerrod Mustafformer Maryland, Knicks and Suns player, died at age 55, on his birthday. The causes of death have not been revealed.

First a player at DeMatha Catholic High School (Hyattsville) then at the University of Maryland where he made a name for himself, Jerrod Mustaf was selected in 17th position by the Knicks in the 1990 Draft.

In 62 games in New York, Jerrod Mustaf averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. With a minor role in the rotation, he then spent three seasons with the Suns, and he was part of the team that reached the 1993 Finals, losing to the Bulls.

A quick trip to Paris

Just after the Finals, Jerrod Mustaf's NBA career was turned upside down following the murder of his partner, Althea Hayes. The basketball player's cousin will be sentenced to life imprisonment for the homicide, without Jerrod Mustaf's role in the affair ever being completely clarified. Because Althea Hayes was pregnant inside Phoenix, who had asked her several times to abort, even offering her money to do so.

Despite the suspicions of investigators, Jerrod Mustaf was not charged during the criminal trial, but he had to find a financial agreement with the family of his former partner during a civil complaint.

Claiming to be “blacklisted” in the NBA following this incident, he then played in Greece, Turkey or Andorra, arriving at Paris Basket Racing in 1998, with Laurent Sciarra and Cyril Julian. It will be a quick passage due to his state of form…

After this failure in the capital, then a final freelance stint in Poland, he finally returned to Maryland in 2000 to develop his favorite sport among young people and get involved in the community.
