Warriors assistant Bruce Fraser accustomed to but still impressed by Stephen Curry

For a decade now, Bruce Fraser works with Stephen Curry. Like Steve Kerr, the Warriors' assistant coach has seen everything and witnessed up close all the exploits and improbable shots of the four-time NBA champion.

Nevertheless, for her first Olympic Games this summer, the star once again amazed the world. After a difficult start to the competition, she broke the records in the semi-final against Serbia, then in the final against France.

“Usually I'm not allowed or supposed to show emotion when Stephen Curry is on fire. That's what my inner self tells itself, even though it's hard to control myself on the bench sometimes.”, Bruce Fraser sayswho was at home with friends to watch this grand finale to the tournament. “But I was standing in front of my sofa every time he shot, at the end of the game, against France.”

Between surprise and expectation

It's still recent so no one has forgotten the final show of the double MVP (2015 and 2016) in the final minutes of this Olympic final. His four winning baskets, and especially the last one, will remain in the memories.

“I think it's the shots from before that make the last one possible,” judge the assistant. “When Stephen gets fired up, he’s like a boxer knocking someone out. He’s probably the best player in history to put a team away, to make a margin go from +6 to +12 or +15. He’s a puncher and also a finisher. So when he hits shots late in the game, which are good shots, with rhythm, then it can lead to a crazy shot. When he’s like that, there’s no one better than him to take a tough shot, which seems impossible.”

But after a decade of shooting, records and extraordinary baskets, is Bruce Fraser still blown away by this style of demonstration or is it, deep down, almost normal for him?

“I've seen this before, but it's still miraculous, unbelievable. I can sit here and say I knew it was going to go in, but it's still crazy. It's crazy,” he concedes. “So it’s between surprise and expectation. We know what he’s capable of, he loves big moments, that’s where he shines. He’s hungry for those moments. He wants those shots. We’re always impressed but we also know him. I know how he works. He plays for those moments and it’s nice to see him play for something unique, at the highest level and to show the world, once again, how good he is.”
