The 2024–25 season will mark the eleventh of Steve Kerr on the bench of Warriors. His record is excellent (65% of victories in the regular season and a whopping 71% in the playoffs), despite events that have sometimes disrupted this well-oiled Californian machine. In particular those involving a certain Draymond Green.
One of them, and it is undoubtedly the most infamous, dates back to October 2022, when the interior of Golden State has completely gone wrong…
” There are many examples… » ironize his coach, when asked what incident made him the most angry. But I think it's definitely the Jordan Poole thing. Draymond and I are similar in a lot of ways, people might not notice it from the outside, but we're both fierce competitors. So we've lost our tempers at times with each other in the middle of a game because of tactical disagreements. But he overstepped the mark with Jordan and he knew it. He knew it immediately. And then it made the season extremely difficult for everybody. That story has been told a few times, but that's probably the one that infuriated me the most.. »
A rift has arisen in the group…
At the time, Draymond Green had hit Jordan Poole in training, because the attitude of the young guard annoyed him. If the offender had then apologized to the group, this altercation had still broken something in the reigning champions of the moment. Like another clash between the four-time NBA champion and Kevin Durant…
” As soon as you lose confidence, and this was the case for us, then the whole process is more complicated. ” Steve Kerr explained at the time. ” I can't be more direct than that. And there's no hiding it: the incident between Draymond and Jordan, earlier this season, played a role in this. It's hard to imagine that it didn't have an impact on the team. »
Suspended afterwards, admitting to having “failed as a leader and as a man”, Draymond Green declared that he had grown and learned from this event, even if he would distinguish himself again a few months later by attacking Rudy Gobert. As for Jordan Poole, he ended up leaving the Warriors in the summer of 2023.
