Sergio Scariolo's declaration of love to Rudy Fernandez

It is therefore in the group stage of the 2024 Olympic Games, at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium, that the career of Rudy Fernandez has ended.

After six Olympic Games (a record), the “best enemy” of the Blues is leaving and we can only salute what the 39-year-old winger has accomplished. Because even if his role has necessarily diminished over the years, Rudy Fernandez has remained the guarantor of the Roja's state of mind, with his two world champion titles (2006 and 2019), his four European champion titles (2009, 2011, 2015 and 2022) and his two Olympic silver medals (2008 and 2012).

The player, who has been suffering from a concussion since the previous match against Australia, did not stop in the “mixed zone” after the match, but Sergio Scariolo paid tribute to him.

“I was blessed to coach him” explains the coach. “So many games, so many competitions. Having seen him never give up, never give in to the physical limitations he had on the winger position, compared to his opponents. That he was always so competitive, so invested, no matter his health or his personal situation. He was always there and he is a great example for his teammates, here, for those who come after him and of course for all the players in the world. Of course, not everyone has incredible jump, talent or size but everyone has to try. Not everyone will succeed but everyone has to try. There is room to compensate for certain limitations with a state of mind and emotional management of a higher level.”
