Joe Mazzulla completes his staff with his former teammate Da'Sean Butler

Joe Mazzulla didn't have to look far into his repertoire to rebuild his staff. The Celtics coach lost his assistant Charles Lee, the new coach in Charlotte, who took with him Blaine Mueller and Jermaine Bucknor, other members of Joe Mazzulla's close guard.

To supplement them, God Shammgod Jr. should land, as has been mentioned for several days, just like Da'Sean Butleraccording to The Boston GlobeA name that will bring back some memories to fans of NCAA basketball or the French championship.

Da'Sean Butler and Joe Mazzulla played together in the NCAA, on the West Virginia side. If the technician of the 2024 champions was more of a man in the shadows, his teammate was the leader of the Mountaineers, who had climbed to the Final Four in 2010.

In full swing, and promised an NBA future, the winger had moved the basketball microcosm after being seriously injured during the semi-final of the university championship against Duke. Da'Sean ButlerButler had then suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, a sprained internal lateral ligament and two bone bruises.

Finally drafted by the Heat in 42nd position, he was not kept by the Florida franchise, notably to make room financially while Miami had just formed its “Big Three”, LeBron James – Dwyane Wade – Chris Bosh.

Da'Sean Butler then quickly left the United States and the D-League for Europe, notably passing through Châlons-Reims in 2014-2015 (10.6 points, 4.8 rebounds). Having returned to coaching since February 2021, the 36-year-old technician will occupy the role of video coordinator within the Celtics staff.
