“I just want to continue playing basketball at a high level, and Monaco allows me to do that.” This is what he said a year ago Kemb Walker upon his arrival on the Rock. Signed to play only in the Euroleague, the former leader of the Hornets and Celtics unfortunately did not play much (26 matches for 4.4 points and 1.1 assists on average), and this Tuesday, he announced that he was retiring from the sport.
A four-time All-Star, Walker is a legend of the Charlotte franchise, where he is the all-time leading scorer with 12,009 points. Unfortunately, and despite 750 games in the NBA, these last five seasons have been a long road to suffering due to major knee problems. Traded to Boston in 2019, he will be far too physically limited to help Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. After missing the playoffs due to an injury, he was traded to the Thunder, where he negotiated a buyout.
The Hornets' all-time leading scorer
What's next? A failed experience in New York, then a short stint in Dallas where he didn't even play. A sad end for a player who made a name for himself 14 years ago by multiplying his exploits with UConn during March Madness. NCAA champion in 2011, his list of achievements includes a selection in a Third All-NBA Team (2019) and two Sportsmanship Awards (2017, 2018).
Here is his message posted on social networks to announce his retirement from sport.
“I want to start by thanking God for everything He has given me. Basketball has done more for me than I could have ever imagined, and I am so grateful for the incredible journey I have been on. With that, I am here to announce that I am officially retiring from basketball. It has all been a dream come true. When I look back, I still can’t believe what I have accomplished in my career. I know I couldn’t have gotten to this point without the incredible support around me. There are so many people to thank: my mom, dad and my entire family, my teammates who have become family, and the coaches who believed in me and brought out the best in me.
Basketball will always be a part of my life, so this is not goodbye. I'm very excited for what's next.”
